Paving in the Andrew County Seat

Asphalt paving in Savannah serves an old courthouse town with a growing number of newer homes. Savannah was founded in 1841 and incorporated in 1842, named for Savannah Woods, the child of an early settler. It is the seat of Andrew County, on Business US 71 about ten miles north of St. Joseph, at 1,076 feet. The population has risen from 3,324 in 1970 to 4,762 in 2000 and 5,069 in 2020.

Upland ground

Savannah sits on higher ground than St. Joseph's river bottoms. USDA soil descriptions place well-drained loess soils on uplands across northwestern Missouri. Well-drained does not mean problem-free: on slopes, runoff still undercuts edges, and flat spots still hold water at the bottom of a driveway. We grade for both.

Older and newer homes

Homes near the square around the Andrew County Courthouse, listed on the National Register in 1980, have older driveways that may be ready for replacement. Newer homes built as the town grew after 1970 mostly need crack sealing, sealcoating and small repairs.

Acreages and gravel

Many homes around Savannah are on acreages with gravel drives. Paving the area by the house and garage and leaving the lane in gravel is a common, cost-effective choice. We grade and compact the gravel as part of the base.

Nearby water

The One Hundred and Two River runs about two miles east of town, and Happy Hollar Lake Conservation Area is about three miles northeast. Properties on lower ground toward the river need more attention to base and drainage.

Our approach

We visit, measure, check drainage and slope, and give you a written quote. If the job reaches the road, we confirm the city's or county's requirements before scheduling.

US 71 and growth

US 71 was four-laned north from Savannah toward Maryville in 2002, and Savannah has kept growing as a commuter town for St. Joseph. Newer subdivisions mean newer driveways, and those are cheapest to keep in shape: seal cracks in the fall they appear and sealcoat once the asphalt has cured.

Neighbors together

If several homes on a street need sealing or crack work, scheduling them on one day lowers the cost for everyone.
