Paving in a University Town
Asphalt paving in Maryville serves a college town with unusually cold winters for Missouri. Maryville was platted on September 1, 1845, named for Mary Graham, wife of the first postmaster, and became the Nodaway County seat that year. It is home to Northwest Missouri State University. The 2020 census counted 10,633 residents with a median age of 25.7, reflecting the student population.
Cold winters
Maryville's 1991-2020 normals show about 141 air frosts a year, 38.37 inches of precipitation and 15.3 inches of snow, with a record low of minus 32 degrees. That many freezes mean a lot of freeze-thaw cycles. Cracks left open in fall turn into potholes by spring. Crack sealing before winter is the most important maintenance here.
Rentals
With a large student population, Maryville has many rental houses and small apartment lots. Rental driveways take more cars and more turnover, and wear at the edges and the street end. Saw-cut patches, edge repair and a sealcoat between leases are usually the best value.
Highways and growth
US 71 and US 136 meet on the east side of the city, and US 71 was four-laned from Savannah in 2002 with a bypass on the east side. Businesses near the bypass need heavier sections where trucks turn.
Employers
The university, Mosaic Medical Center, the Maryville Treatment Center and Kawasaki's engine plant all have large lots that need phased repairs and maintenance plans.
Our approach
Site visit, written quote, warm-weather paving. Maryville is our farthest regular trip, so we group jobs there.
Campus calendar
Student move-in and move-out set the calendar for rental owners. Paving and patching between the end of the spring semester and August move-in gives new asphalt time to set before cars return.
Edges
Edges on rentals break where tenants park off the pavement. Rebuilding and backfilling them helps.
