Paving at the Edge of the Loess Hills
Asphalt paving in Mound City is shaped by its setting. Mound City sits at the southern end of the Loess Hills, the band of wind-deposited soil that runs about 200 miles along the Missouri River. It was platted in 1856 as North Point, renamed in 1871 for mounds near the original town site, and incorporated in 1873. It is in Holt County near the I-29 and Route 118 interchange, at 961 feet. The population peaked at 1,681 in 1900 and was 1,004 in 2020.
Loess under the driveway
Loess is called sugar clay because it is extremely hard when dry, but it loses all cohesion when wet and is prone to slumping and erosion. On sloped lots, that means runoff along an edge can carry soil away from under the asphalt. We rebuild undermined areas with crushed stone and keep water off and away from edges.
Older homes
With a population that peaked over a century ago, many Mound City homes are old, and so are their driveways. We look at whether the base can be saved before recommending anything.
Refuge traffic
The 7,500-acre Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge is about five miles away. In March 2008 snow goose numbers topped one million and drew nearly 300,000 visitors. Businesses that serve visitors need lots that are smooth and clearly marked for spring migration season.
Gravel and farms
Many properties nearby are farms and acreages with gravel lanes. We pave the parking area and near-house stretch.
Our approach
Site visit, written quote, warm-weather paving. Work near I-29 or state routes follows state rules; we confirm them first.
Paving season
Full paving runs from late spring into early fall. Sealing ends by early October.
Repairs
For driveways with only a few bad spots, saw-cut patches rebuild the base under each failure and blend into the rest.
