Paving in a Former Interurban Town
Asphalt paving in Dearborn serves a small town between the St. Joseph and Kansas City areas. Dearborn was incorporated in 1882 and named for Henry Dearborn, a Revolutionary War general. Most of it is in Platte County, about half a mile south of the Buchanan County line, with part of the city in Buchanan County. From 1913 to 1933 it was a stop on the Kansas City, Clay County and St. Joseph interurban railway. The 2020 census counted 482 residents, at 879 feet.
Creek and reservoir
Bee Creek flows past the west side of town, and Dearborn Reservoir lies just across the county line to the north. Lots on lower ground near the creek tend to stay wetter, which matters for a driveway base. We use more crushed stone there and shape the surface to shed water.
Older town driveways
With a population that has been roughly stable for a century, many driveways in town are old and patched. We check the base and recommend repair, resurfacing or replacement accordingly.
Rural properties
Many homes nearby are on acreages with gravel drives. We pave the parking area and near-house section over compacted gravel.
Schools and library
The North Platte County R-I district runs its junior high and high school in Dearborn, and there is a Mid-Continent Public Library branch. School lots are best done in summer.
Our approach
Site visit, written quote, and paving in warm, dry weather. If the job reaches the road, we confirm local requirements.
Interurban and roads
Parts of the old interurban right-of-way are still visible around Dearborn. Today the town is on Routes Z and Y, about a mile east of US 71. Homes on busier routes see more salt and grit in winter, which wears sealer faster.
Small-town scheduling
We group Dearborn jobs with Platte City and Agency work to keep travel costs down.
Paving season
Full paving happens from late spring into early fall, when the ground is warm and dry. Crack sealing is best in late summer and fall.
