Paving on Missouri River Bottomland
Asphalt paving in Elwood is river-bottom work. Elwood is in Doniphan County, Kansas, directly west across the Missouri River from St. Joseph. A trading post was set up there in 1852, the town was laid out after 1856, and it was incorporated in 1860. At 817 feet it sits lower than most of St. Joseph. The population peaked at 1,275 in 1980 and was 1,125 in 2020.
Low, flat ground
Bottomland is flat and the water table can sit close to the surface. Driveways here do not wash out the way bluff driveways do; instead, water sits under them and freezes. A deeper crushed-stone base, good compaction and enough slope to move water to the edges are the keys.
Older driveways
Most Elwood homes have been there for decades. Older driveways are often cracked across their width where the base has settled unevenly. We check the base and recommend repair, overlay or replacement accordingly.
Schools
Elwood and Wathena schools consolidated in 2010 to form Riverside USD 114. School lots are best done during summer break.
Gravel drives
Some homes in and around Elwood still have gravel. Paving over compacted gravel with added stone keeps dust down and makes snow removal easier.
Our approach
We cross the river regularly. Site visit, written quote, and warm-weather paving. Work at the street follows Elwood's or Doniphan County's requirements, which we confirm before scheduling.
Care
On flat ground, keep downspouts from discharging onto the driveway; the water has nowhere to go.
River traffic
Elwood sits at the Kansas end of the bridges to St. Joseph, and US 36 traffic passes nearby. Businesses near the highway see trucks and travelers and need heavier sections where vehicles turn.
Paving season
We pave from late spring into early fall, once bottomland soil has dried out enough to compact the base on firm ground.
Repairs
For a driveway with a few bad areas, saw-cut patches rebuild the base under each failure. If failures cover most of it, replacement is usually the better value.
